Hurricane Harvey & Me

In case you hadn’t heard, there’s a big hurricane in South Texas. Hurricane Harvey barreled through Rockport, just north of my hometown of Corpus Christi, and is hovering inland and dumping buckets and buckets of rain.

I’m in the Houston area, on the Galveston side. In the last 24 hours, my town has had somewhere around 15 inches of rain dumped on it. And it’s still raining pretty hard.

Let me assure readers that I and my family are fine. We happen to live on a street that has never flooded, not even in Tropical Storm Allison (the last storm here responsible for major flooding), and the water puddles in my yard are nowhere near our house.

However, I do have friends impacted, and I ask that you pray for them. Additionally, I need to let y’all know that I might be back up and running on schedule this week. Or I might not.

Because more rain and power outages are expected. We currently don’t have internet, so I’m posting this through my phone’s mobile hotspot. And most importantly to us, we may need to turn our attention to opening up our home to any friends and family who are affected by flooding.

Stay safe wherever you are. I’ll be back as soon as I can — tomorrow, I hope — but in the meantime, I’m praying that God carries you and your marriage through the storms of life and you find calm and happiness.

When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;

Isaiah 43:2a, 3a

  1. Thanks for the update; my wife and I have been praying for all who are near the storm, and any and all affected. Stay safe, we know you’ll do all you can, both in helping others out who are affected, and in returning to marriage blogging. First things first, see you in here soon.

  2. Oh, goodness. All my favorite bloggers live in Texas! I just read the book about the Galveston hurricane at the turn of the century. Absolutely horrific, and a very vulnerable area, probably even today. Exactly what Wayne said … do what you need to do. We’ll wait. And we’ll pray for God’s steady presence for all affected.

  3. Stay safe! We’re starting to get a lot of rain and a few tornados in southern Louisiana this morning.

  4. We’re just up 45 from you but outside of the worst part of the storm. Please take care and my thoughts and prayers are with all of y’all that were either impacted when Harvey made landfall or because of all of this rainfall.

  5. We’re at the other end of the area, in Katy. J, please stay safe, and we are praying for you. Our verse of the day popped up this morning and was very encouraging. 2 Cor. 1:3-4, about God comforting us so we can share that comfort with others. I also pray that God will show His glory through this, and His people will show His love. Thanks for all you do for our marriages.

  6. J, my husband and I are praying for you and your family. We have immediate and extended family in Southeast TX who are also being hit hard by the storm. we live up North now, and we hate not being able to help in a practical sense. But we are praying, and will continue to.

  7. Today during prayer at my Church our Pastor spoke the verese you shared from Isiah with regard to prayer for Harvey victims. It was nice to recognize it and its significance Thanks for sharing that. I thought of you and your blog and prayed that since we have not heard from you that your plight is that you are very busy helping others rather than having issues of your own related to the storm and its aftermath. My buddy was not so lucky yet God provided. I am looking forward to hearing your stories of faith from this event. I hope you are well

  8. Hi, I live in Katy and the heartbreak of the loss for so many friends and family is overwhelming but the outpouring of love and help shown to so many is heartwarming.
