It's insane that we have to talk about sex during the election. I just really shake my head over this one. It is a sign of things to come in our culture. We must talk about these issues with our kids, because they are going to hear it no matter what. I just wish we didn't have this going down during the election.

My favorite part of your post was the one where you advise people to ask their kids what they think. I find that too many parents (my own included when I was growing up) are great at *telling* kids what to think, not actually being interested in the thoughts that are already there. Thanks for encouraging parents to be active listeners as well as talkers. :)

Good comments, J:
As a father who's reared four children to adulthood--all married with kids of their own--I still can't offer narrowly explicit answers. But I have some observations. Keep it age-appropriate. Seventy years ago, as a child of seven, I'd heard from godly parents that certain important people had committed adultery, divorced, etc. I didn't know what adulterers did, exactly, but I knew it had to be unspeakably wicked.
Yet when I learned that Israel's greatest king, David--"a man after God's own heart"--committed adultery and murder I easily also believed that when David repented (Psalms 51), God forgave him and restored him, though in Absalom, Amnon, Tamar and Adonijah David reaped the earthly consequences of his sin with Bathsheba.
Too, the Lord uses even wicked leaders to bring Him glory and to bless others. God called the powerful and evil king of Babylon, "My servant" (Jeremiah 25:9). Henry VIII, an evil man known to carry syphilis, married six wives. One died in childbirth; one outlived him; he divorced two; two he beheaded. Yet God used the wicked King Henry's edicts to restore property rights to millions of the English poor, and to bring religious freedom to England, setting a pattern soon followed by Scotland, and eventually to both the United States and Canada--an issue that's very much alive in this election year.
In explaining the sexual wickednesses of our own political leaders to children, I think it's important to show that our wise Lord often uses even wicked men and women to His own glory and the blessing of others. Probably the Old Testament story of King David is the best place to begin with children. And let's not stop with telling them the slingshot and giant episode!

Fortunately my two girls grew up in a more innocent age, and survived their teen and young adult years and remain Christians. My grand kids are growing up now, and I dread what they are being exposed to, but I cannot do much being many miles away from them. I do pray often for my kids to be able to talk wisely to their kids.
